Paul Taylor received his PhD from the University of Edinburgh, and is the founder and Chief Executive Officer of Phonetic Arts Ltd. He has previously been Lecturer and Director in the Centre for Speech Technology Research at the University of Edinburgh, a visiting lecturer at the University of Cambridge, and was founder and Chief Technical Officer of Rhetorical Systems.

everything you need to know about speech synthesis

This book is an excellent introduction to all aspects of speech synthesis. It tells you everything you need to know, with ample discussion as to why you need to know it. There's also plenty of material suitable for readers already familiar with the subject who are interested in more advanced discussions. The discussion of HMM-based synthesis is a good example of this - the text is a good accompaniment to the current literature. There's also a very good introduction to speech signal processing, particularly for students with a good math background but who haven't yet studied DSP.

This book is one of the core texts for the Cambridge MPhil in Computer Speech, Text and Internet Technology. By all accounts, students have found the material very helpful and interesting. I recommend it highly.

This was my first book on TTS, and I couldn't be happier with it. It makes me want to study the field further, in that it was presented in a way that was easy to understand for someone with little or no previous knowledge about TTS. I would highly recommend it.

The Corrupting Sea is a history of the relationship between people and their environments in the Mediterranean region over some 3,000 years. It advocates a novel analysis of this relationship in terms of microecologies and the often extensive networks to which they belong. This is the first major work since Braudel's The Mediterranean to address the problems of studying the area as a whole and on a long time-scale.

The authors emphasize the value of comparison between prehistory, Antiquity and the Middle Ages. They draw on an exceptionally wide range of evidence - literary works, documents, archaeology, scientific reports and social anthropology.

About the Author

Peregrine Horden is Professor of Medieval History at Royal Holloway, University of London.
Nicholas Purcell is Fellow and Tutor in Ancient History, St John's College, Oxford, and a Fellow of the British Academy. They began studying Mediterranean history when both were Fellows of All Souls College, Oxford.

Horden and Purcell argue that the Mediterranean is (and always has been) a complex mosaic of useful microregional niches

A comprehensive, pan-regional study of the particular characteristics that contribute to our collective understanding of what is "the Mediterranean", this tome is Braudel for the twenty-first century, and will remain an essential starting point for any serious discussion about Mediterranean history for years to come. In essence, Drawing on a vast range of historical sources and some archaeological material, Horden and Purcell argue that the Mediterranean is (and always has been) a complex mosaic of useful microregional niches, each of which can be usefully exploited by local populations in order to offset the shortcomings of other, nearby niches. Perhaps the main weakness of the book is that there is no meaningful incorporation of palaeoecological data to add scientific heft to these arguments, as most people will agree that historical records can be problematic for a variety of reasons.

This tome is one for which the adjective "magisterial" was coined; the authors seem to be very much aware of this, as some of the prose can seem pompous and unnecessarily abstruse, peppered liberally with quotations from other languages which Horden and Purcell have not bothered to translate for the mere peasants reading their book. Quibbles aside, this book is the very definition of 'essential reading'.

I like reading history. I enjoy with it. I am not a professional historian. In the last few years I have tried and read books offering a broad scope and general overviews of history such as this one.

In this work, the authors intend to study Mediterranean history as a whole, the history of the region. For them, the Mediterranean is only loosely defined, distinguishable from its neighbours to degrees that vary with time, geographical direction and topic. Its boundaries are not the sort to be drawn easily on a map. Its continuities are best thought of continuities of form or pattern, within which all is mutability.
In that sense, the distinctiveness of Mediterranean history results (they propose) from the paradoxical coexistence of a milieu of relatively easy seaborne communications with a quite unusually fragmented topography of microregions in the sea's coastlands and islands. The different chapters of the book are aimed to impressionistically show some of the prime ingredients in the normal variability and connectivity of Mediterranean microregions: the shifting along a spectrum of possibilities; the fluctuating relations between pastoralism and agriculture; the manipulative state with its taxes and symbols; the mobility of people both voluntarily -economic migration- and compulsory -military service- (not necessarily very distinct); a history of Mediterranean redistribution as inseparable from that of the people (who are often profoundly mobile) who produce, store, process, transport and consume.
The authors also warn that several central topics have been reserved for a Volume 2 to come in the future: climate, disease, demography and the relations between the Mediterranean and other major areas of the globe.
I have rated it four starts. Considering its content, I think it should be five; considering its readability, three (sometimes falling to two, sometimes raising to four).

The Killing Zone

Honest, down to earth and without self-importance, Dorney has written a book which grabs your attention from the outset. He lets you make your own mind up about the politics and high level military decisions that steer the campaign, for this is not a book that carries any political or military statement. So what you get here is the straight forward story of a tour of duty, in which ordinary young men and women achieve extra-ordinary feats in the face of grave danger. Well researched and written in plain english, this is an easy read which allows you to enter the world of the Grenadier Guard infantry soldier (and his supporting elements) where you can vividly imagine each and every situation as it unfolds. It would be impossible not to be touched by the bravery and camaraderie that is shown not just by the Grenadiers but also by their Afghan counterparts.

Just finished reading the book, I really took my time reading it an absorbed every page. It is without doubt a Fantastic written account of what took place on the 2007 tour through the summer months. I dont think the civ pop even reading it could comprehend what everyone that was involved went through on a daily basis......the constant heat, the struggle for resupply an the constant ied threat. Massive well done to every Grenadier involved, R.I.P to everyone who didnt make it Home.

It is clear that Skid Dorney has spent a lifetime soldiering, and the picture he paints of the Grenadier Guards in Afganistan is vivid, tough and horrifying.But it shows Britain's young soldiers fighting a tough battle against the Taliban, governed by stupid regulations, never the less showing the spirit of a Regiment 350 years old. Makes you proud to be British.

The Ethics of Secular Humanism

At about the age of 23 I discovered for the first time that I had a mind. Previous to that, I had been more-or-less incapable of any sort of introspection. Smoking marijuana opened my unconscious mind and I felt like I was able to step outside of myself and see myself for the first time. I immediately started reading books other than adventure novels. One of the first authors I discovered was Eric Fromm. His thinking completely galvanized me. I thought that he had figured out all human problems, and all people had to do was pay attention. I knew essentially nothing about Freud, Jung, Marx, Nietzsche, and so on, and Fromm synthesized all of their thinking into a coherent system. Fromm championed the bogey-man of right-wing Christianity, namely secular humanism. The idea of which is that the foundations for value systems should be based on man’s autonomy and reason. In order to know what was good for man, one has to know the nature of man. Authoritarian ethics is an irrational system based on acquiring power over people. This strikes me as so self-evident that it’s incredible that it could arouse controversy. Fromm claims that one of the best tools for knowing human nature is psychoanalysis.

These days Freud’s ideas are commonly held to be erroneous, and some critics dismiss Fromm’s ideas as he relies upon ideas of Freud. This is nonsense. Freud was one of mankind’s greatest geniuses. While it is true that his motivations discoveries he made regarding human nature were physiologically clockwork, following the prejudices of his time, Fromm acknowledged this. Too completely dismiss Freud’s ideas on this basis would be like denouncing Kepler’s equations because he thought that planetary motion was caused by the “Holy Spirit,” or Newton’s theory of gravity because he explained it in terms of action at a distance.

Rereading Fromm forty some years later, I am astonished at the extent to which he and I think alike. No doubt, this is because I devoured his work at an impressionable time of my life. So I still think that his ideas should be taught in high school. One thing I’ve become convinced of over the years is that irrational devotion to dogma is most often the source of evil, whether the dogma is religious or political. Teaching young people to not enslave their minds to authoritarian dogma is simply sane.

Can there be an ethical system that does not rely on moral absolutes on the one hand or moral relativism on the other? Is there any other way? This book says yes and -- amazingly, brilliantly -- lays it out in a way that makes perfect sense. The only value we can know, the only value we need, and the only value that can have any real claim on us is OUR value, human value, and that is neither absolute nor relativistic. If this sounds absurd or offensive to you, skip this book. If you see the brilliance in it, you're in for a treat. I've read this book several times and can't get enough. Fromm is an underappreciated genius.
