Getting It Published, 2nd Edition: A Guide for Scholars and Anyone Else Serious about Serious Books (Chicago Guides to Writing, Editing, an

Since 2001 William Germano’s Getting It Published has helped thousands of scholars develop a compelling book proposal, find the right academic publisher, evaluate a contract, handle the review process, and, finally, emerge as published authors.
But a lot has changed in the past seven years. With the publishing world both more competitive and more confusing—especially given the increased availability of electronic resources—this second edition of Germano’s best-selling guide has arrived at just the right moment. As he writes in a new chapter, the “via electronica” now touches every aspect of writing and publishing. And although scholars now research, write, and gain tenure in a digital world, they must continue to ensure that their work meets the requirements of their institutions and the needs of their readers. Germano, a veteran editor with experience in both the university press and commercial worlds, knows this audience. This second edition will teach readers how to think about, describe, and pitch their manuscripts before they submit them. They’ll discover the finer points of publishing etiquette, including how to approach a busy editor and how to work with other publishing professionals on matters of design, marketing, and publicity. In a new afterword, they’ll also find helpful advice on what they can—and must—do to promote their work. A true insider’s guide to academic publishing, the second edition of Getting It Published will help authors understand what to expect from the publishing process, from manuscript to finished book and beyond.

Review
“Though it’s the most urgent problem any academic faces, we don’t hold any faculty meetings to discuss the question of ‘How DO you write a book and get it published, anyway?’ We academics like to pretend instead that we know how do this stuff—how did we get to be academics if we don’t?  But William Germano is privy to the dark secret that many graduate students, junior faculty members, and even . . . uh, full professors think they know how to do this stuff but actually don’t. In a terrific book that’s a joy to read, Germano provides direct and savvy advice that will help all of us not just to get it published but to make it as good as we can.” (Gerald Graff, professor of English, University of Illinois at Chicago, 2008 president of MLA 2008-03-07)

“This endlessly useful and expansive guide is every academic’s pocket Wikipedia: a timely, relevant, and ready resource on scholarly publishing, from the traditional monograph to the digital e-book. I regularly share it, teach it, and consult it myself, whenever I have a question on titling a chapter, securing a permission, or negotiating a contract. Professional advice simply does not get any savvier than this pitch-perfect manual on how to think like a publisher.” (Diana Fuss, professor of English, Princeton University 2008-05-05)

“For all of us who suffer the dark night of the publishing soul, Getting It Published comes as a most welcome beacon of light. Germano is ourVirgil for the not-always-divine comedy of academic publishing. He coaxes us as authors and writers to ask ‘the right questions’ of ourselves, of our publishers, and of our audiences. In this wonderful and insightful book Germano provides—with wisdom, whimsy, and wit—hard-nosed advice and good humored encouragement.  From basic ‘how to’ and ‘must I really?’ questions to invaluable counsel about negotiating the uncharted territory of electronic publishing, this is THE field guide anyone needs who is making their way from the purgatorio of the manuscript on the desk to the paradiso of a book well-published.” (David Kyuman Kim, director of the Center for the Comparative Study of Race and Ethnicity and associate professor at Connecticut College 2008-07-15)

“If books are the slow food of our increasingly frenetic scholarly communications culture, in Bill Germano we have their Escoffier. Whether delineating the features of an effective book proposal, explaining the mysteries of the editorial selection process, or extolling the virtues of the book as a defining mode of academic discourse, Germano succeeds at joining practical advice with intellectual insight throughout. Budding and seasoned scholars alike, as well as their administrators, will find more than a writer’s reference in Getting It Published. They will find a guide to the academic life. Bon apetit!” (Peter J. Dougherty, Director, Princeton University Press 2008-07-22)

Useful for the unpublished
By Regan N. Clem
William Germano, vice president and publishing director at Routledge, wrote Getting It Published to explain the expectations that scholarly publishing houses have toward writers. He set forth as his goals "to explain how publishers select manuscripts and publish them, to help the serious writer best present her or his work so that its chances for acceptance will be significantly increased," and "to show how the process from submission to publication can be made to work, and work well for both publisher and author" (x). Germano's helps train the young scholar how to shop his book around after he has done sufficient research and written a manuscript.

Germano explains that an author must ask the two questions: "Why did I write this book?" "Whom did I write it for?" (1). Too often, an author has too big of expectations for their book. Many scholarly works concern a niche subject that will not penetrate the culture at large. It is important for the author to understand what audience would be interested in his book and to approach publishing houses that have shown an interest in that subject.

In the end, Germano's Getting It Published is very useful at guiding the unpublished author through the upcoming publication obstacle course. His perspective is unique to most scholars since he is on the publisher side of the fence, and this perspective provides a lot of insights that would not be shared in a conversation with a fellow scholar. The neat thing about reading through this book is that it actually inspired me to delve more into my research and write more. Germano has written a book that provides a good practical layout on simple things like writing letters and asking for permissions to reprint pictures, quotes and poetry while at the same time expressing what the expectations for the author are and what the author should expect out of the publisher. It lays it all out concisely and clearly.

You need this if you're writing a scholarly book
By Sitting in Seattle
It's easy to decide whether this book is for you: if you're writing or considering writing a first or second scholarly book, you should read this. It will educate you and probably save a lot of time and heartache. But if you're not writing a scholarly book -- if you're hoping instead to publish fiction, or a popular book, or a scholarly article, or a conference paper, or are writing (as opposed to publishing) a dissertation -- then it's not for you. It's only about academic and technical works from scholarly and specialized presses.

The book was recommended to me by a colleague who is completing his second academic book and who has been encouraging me to write a book in my area. I'm glad I listened and purchased it. Germano knows his stuff: he's worked for a long time in the industry and knows all the important questions, which he answers in a clear, no-nonsense way. He wants the potential author to understand what makes a book attractive, publishable, potentially profitable, and what it takes to succeed.

Of course it has all the expected content, such as how to submit an inquiry and what the various steps are in the process, but what I didn't expect and was delighted to find was how much insight he delivers into the process. How do regional university presses work? How does publishing a book relate to an academic career? And he answers all of the most likely questions along the way: what makes a book scholarly versus general interest? What do editors do? What makes a good title? Can one propose a work to multiple publishers? And so forth.

Its own style is straightforward and easy to read, with dashes of mild humor and jokes that are suitable to academic audiences. Importantly, you should know that it is not a style book. It has general pointers to things like layout but is not a reference. It's all about understanding how the scholarly publishing industry works and how you, as a potential author, fit in. It's in a well-deserved second edition. Thank you to the author!

Must-read for prospective authors
By Vlad
Excellent - a VERY detailed introduction to all facets of the publishing business. A must-read for a first-time author, and some experienced ones. Lots of clear examples and answers to questions you would not have thought of to ask. One minor complaint - maybe just a few too many cute titles of book projects that no one would ever propose. At first you are are captivated by them, but the relentless cleverness is bit wearing by the end. Nevertheless, this cannot detract from the enormous amount of very useful, well-presented information. Do not think of submitting a book proposal without reading this.
