How a Basic Book Came to Provide Cutting Edge Tools

The economics of power systems differs from that of other markets in appearance and in reality. But appearances deceive and produce false new economic theories—e.g., competitive pricing cannot pay the cost of power plants. The real differences lie hidden and allow a blind faith that "the market" will solve all problems—e.g., provide a reliable level of generation capacity.

I began the book knowing that much of this confusion could be cleared up by stripping away apparent differences to show that power markets usually work like normal markets. Economics does not need re-writing, only careful application. But power systems present some genuine puzzles.

Applying basic economics to apparent differences leads to familiar results. I have presented these results simply along with examples for the uninitiated. The same approach leads to surprising results when applied to real differences. For example, the demand side of today’s power markets is quantitatively so different from standard text-book markets that it produces an unusual type of market failure. Part 2 of the book reveals how the lack of coordination between engineers and regulators, in controlling this failure, produces the headline-grabbing price spikes characteristic of current markets.

Part 3 analyzes day-ahead and real-time markets but also asks fundamental questions about the need for complex pools. Are their calculations subverted by the bids of speculators? Observations of Eastern pools suggest power-market design is still in its early stages. This book provides a simple yet solid foundation, diagnoses the problems that now threaten the existence of deregulated markets, and provides tools to help make repairs.

A disappointing book for economists...

... or those wishing to see what economists really have to offer regarding power systems. Stoft's technical discussion of power markets, or locational pricing, mechanisms is just fine. But he offers nothing about the economics of electricity transmission, without which spatially diverse power markets are merely a theory. As such, his book is of no particular use to those looking to understand the economic issues that bedevil large power markets, like those in the US, where persistent transmission constraints can impair the functioning of the best "market architecture."
"Economics" is a loosely-used term in electricity market circles. Those wishing to understand the economic princiles behind power markets, as opposed to the mechanics of power systems, will have to look elsewhere.

A combination of EE101 and ECO101.

cons: It covers a lot of entry level material regarding power system and economics. If you know both power system engineering and economics, it won't be a help since it is too elementary. If you don't know power system or economics, don't expect you can build up a solid background by reading this book.
pros: it is good review of EE101 and ECO101.

Alert: this book really didn't tell you anything about designing a electricity market: the fundmental incentive compatibility is not covered at all!
IT IS JUST A REVIEW BOOK, NOT A GUIDE BOOK YOU CAN DEPENDEND ON FOR MARKET DESIGN ADN ANALYSIS.

Published fanfiction? More please.

I enjoyed this a good deal. I'm more of a fanfic reader than a book junkie, but seeing published fanfiction was a real treat. As other reviews have stated, you don't need to be a super huge fan of the series to understand what's going on (as I've only read a bit of the original series & seen the BBC version).
While I'm not a huge fan of BDSM, this contained a mild case of if - softcore, if you will, though the sex involved in this book is anything but. I wish there had been more use of safewords, maybe draw out the love making a bit longer, though over all it kept me entertained and on the edge of my seat. I thought this to be more realistic than other novels out containing explicit BDSM practice (that Grey novel, for example).

I also enjoyed Sherlock being tickled by John's mustache in nearly every chapter.

Side note, the book came sprayed with some sort of perfume? The back of the cover was damp as were some of the pages, but it was a pleasant fragrance regardless.

Passionately written, achingly erotic Holmesian pastiche

Compound a Felony is an excellent Sherlock Holmes pastiche, written in the style of the original Conan Doyle stories and offering a 'behind the scenes' view of what life might have really been like for the famous detective and his doctor. It's also a blisteringly hot BDSM romance, and honestly the most achingly erotic novel I've ever read.

The book chronicles the first twenty years of Holmes and Watson's acquaintance, with each chapter detailing a significant milestone in their relationship, told from alternating POVs. As they deepen their bond beyond mere friendship, they discover the emotional importance of the 'game' they play; Watson calming and quieting the rampaging mind that 'threatens to tear itself to pieces' without a case, Holmes allowing Watson to feel needed and embrace his 'baser' instincts, both using the language of dominance and submission to express the emotional truths they often find so difficult to speak aloud.

While some readers might find the BDSM aspects in the novel 'tame', they are nonetheless the best I've ever seen in a published work - beautifully written, emotionally compelling, realistically portrayed, and above all consensual. I would not hesitate to recommend Compound a Felony to anyone who desires proper representation of a D/s relationship, as well as those simply looking for a scorchingly hot read. From the from references to ACD canon and well researched depictions of Victorian London life, to the delicate intimacy that felt like a privilege for the reader to witness, there's so much CaF has to offer, and makes this erotic novel stand out from the rest.

I don’t think I need to say much about who Sherlock Holmes and Dr John Watson are! Holmes is the great investigator we all know, master of logic and a total genius in solving crime mysteries in Victorian London! Sometimes he needs help to find something – his priceless friend, Watson, is always there to lend a hand.

But Dr Watson isn’t just his work, but also, his sex companion!! This unusual m/m historical romance points out the homosexuality of John Watson and Sherlock Holmes focusing on dominance and submission. Sometimes kink is the major focus, sometimes it’s a side element.

If you like this era and m/m d/s sex plays then this book is for you. It’s wonderful fanfiction, a story full of love and nothing disgusting about the heroes or their love at all. In the MM romance style, this book is worth reading.

The Bible for Research Admin

I was in research administration a few years ago but did not know of this resource. I am returning to research administration now and was pointed to this text. I have not had the opportunity to study it carefully start to finish, it is hundreds of pages long, but it looks to cover every aspect of research administration. You may want to consider weight training if you have to carry this text any distance. This looks to be the most comprehensive reference on research administration available and I look forward to spending more time with it.

Wasn't Quite What I Wanted.

This was an okay book. My daughter enjoyed it. But, we purchased it with the specific idea of introducing the concept of a baby sister to her. While it was cute, it wasn't very realistic. In no way is my daughter old enough to do the things Olivia does for her little brothers. And, and newborn doesn't do the same sort of things Olivia's little brothers do.

Cute book, just not for introducing a newborn to big sister.

Not for introducing a new baby- instead is a guide for being a big sister in general

I bought this to help prepare our toddler for being a big sister. It doesn't mention anything about parents bringing home a new baby. Instead it shows how she enjoys helping being a big sister in general (to a preschool & older toddler brother). A cute book, but not quite what I was hoping for/ expecting.

Advice on being a big sister that only Olivia can deliver

This is a great framing of the "job" of being a big sister that only Olivia can deliver. This isn't really geared for that initial bring home baby phase (I highly recommend I'm a Big Sister by Joanne Cole), but great for the follow up after the new baby is up and about and the big sister responsibilities grow. The stickers that come with the book are really cute, and a nice bonus.

Really interesting

Talks in depth about mating on each of the seven planes of consciousness, among other interesting topics. The topic is the same as the first chapter of The Perfect Matrimony by Samael Aun Weor. But since this is an entire book rather than a single chapter, it goes into much more detail and renders the subject much more understandable.

If You're into Esoterica, Read this Book.

If your not the type of person who generally agrees with esoteric/occultic thought, then you may take issue with some of what is presented in this book... but, then again, if you already have qualms with esoterica, why are you reading anything by Dion Fortune?

A lot of what is written in this book - I feel - must be taken in conjunction with the perspective of the author: the time period, where she comes from, and her status within that society. For example, I would question her opinion on homosexuality (even though I'm not a homosexual), given the pluralistic values of our current culture in comparison to the values of her time. None-the-less, she makes an excellent argument for her position: each chapter gradually building upon the previous chapters successively until the breadth of material becomes clear. Questions I had in the beginning and middle of the book were addressed in later chapters, leaving no holes by the conclusion.

I would, though, especially recommend that the reader take their time on the chapter regarding the 7 planes. Having those clear in your mind will make the rest of the book much easier to comprehend.

Otherwise, I agree with the other reviewers. I thoroughly appreciated how this book made a consideration of the energetic principles involved in how human being relate to one another (as opposed to providing a "thou shalt/shalt not" list of behavior based on some doctrine that doesn't explain the WHY of the preference/avoidance). This is one of those books which, personality being accepting to a different perspective, all youths should read as a "coming of age" into their adulthood (and the sexual liberty that comes with it). It would aid to dodge a lot of unhealthy relationships.

I only gave this book 4 stars based upon my ability to test its veracity against an internal sympathy/harmony. (I would have been very happy to give it a 4.5 if that were an option). Yet, this may be simply a symptom of a lack of understanding, experience and/or ability to comprehend on my part.

In any case, it's a relatively inexpensive book and a quick read (my wife and I read it together in the course of an afternoon), so there's really nothing to lose by purchasing & reading this book.

Indispensable work on Divine Marriage

As with most of Dion Fortune's works (said only because I haven't yet read them all), this piece is indispensable for anyone wanting to understand the world around them. Yes, it is about marriage -- and not only on the physical plane; that is what makes it so potent, because Fortune shows why natural marriages are as they are FROM SPIRITUAL CAUSES. But because all of creation is built up from this basic marriage of two divine halves, the book offers much to consider in contemplating any subject.
The nice thing here, too, is that despite the depths that Fortune can reach in certain works, she tries to keep this one simple enough for even beginning readers. By the end she may really be pushing them ... but by then, they've been well prepared.
This is a must-have for any student of the esoteric.
