About the Author
Benjamin Pierce received a B.S. in Biology from Southern Methodist University and a Ph.D. from the University of Colorado. Ben is currently Professor of Biology and holder of the Lillian Nelson Pratt Chair at Southwestern University, Georgetown, TX. He is a population geneticist who conducts ecological and evolutionary research on amphibians. Ben has authored a number of articles in research journals and several books, including: The Family Genetics Sourcebook, a guide to genetics for the layperson; Genetics: A Conceptual Approach, a general genetics textbook; Genetics Essentials: Concepts and Connections, a brief genetics textbook; and Transmission and Population Genetics: A Short Course, a textbook for courses in transmission and population genetics.  Ben is a member of the steering committee of the 21st Century Science Coalition, a group of scientists who support strong science standards for Texas public schools. He is the President of the Texas Academy of Science, is a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Sigma Xi, and is a Fellow of the Texas Academy of Science. He currently serves on the editorial board of Bioscience. He has received research and teaching grants from the Natural Science Foundation, the W. M. Keck Foundation, the 3M Foundation, the National Park Service, the Williamson County Conservation Foundation, and the National Geographic Society.

Easy to read and useful

The required book for my genetics course was dry so I supplemented it with this book. I frequently used it throughout the course and found it very helpful. I ended up doing the best on the problem-solving questions in that course due to the concepts I learned in this book.

Very good condition of the product. In my opinion a very good price. And, regardless it is not the last edition of it, I believe it can be used for the same thing that the last one, it contains basically the same information and concepts.

Solid text

I used this with my genetics class over the summer. The information is very clear and well organized. I found it incredibly useful. The inserts on real-world issues in genetics were very interesting as well.

However, sometimes this book is quirky in an odd way. For example, one of the chapter introductions refers to Helicobacter pylori as a 'sexy bacterium.' I'm not kidding. It's good for a laugh, but what were the authors thinking?! Nonetheless it has no effect on the material in the text, and thus I would recommend it for a genetics class.

"THIS IS THE SECOND EDITION OF THIS EYE PATHOLOGY ATLAS from Ralph Eagle. To the author’s credit, he has made an excellent atlas even better. The text is now in the standard portrait format, which makes it more user friendly. The excellence of the first edition, primarily designed as an atlas and “basic text,” was marred by the deficient quality of some of the photographs. This deficiency has been addressed in the new edition, and the 259 new photographs are of superb quality. The clinical or gross photographs are typically included alongside photomicrographs of the same pathological entity. In the first edition, the text was totally separate from and preceded the figures, which were presented 4 to a page. The organization of each chapter has now been modified so that the figures are embedded within the text in a format more typical of textbooks.

The second edition of Eye Pathology: An Atlas and Text is invaluable as a study tool for ophthalmic pathology and well worth the purchase price. The review questions alone make this an exceptionally useful resource for ophthalmology residents. The book is not as comprehensive as some ophthalmic pathology textbooks, but it is not meant to be. It is, however, one of the best ophthalmic pathology study resources available and should be a part of any ophthalmologist’s library. No ophthalmology resident should be without it."

How did King, who came from a subordinated group within American society, help effect this change? What background, characteristics, abilities and ideas enabled him to do this? Why was King so important in shaping the civil rights movement?
 
John A. Kirk looks at the sources of King¿s power in the black community and its relationship to wider American society, focusing particularly on the role of the black church, the philosophy of nonviolence and issues of leadership, whilst paying due attention to the voices of King¿s critics and detractors and to the limitations of his power. A salamander joins one side, creating an imbalance, but then another one of equal weight joins the other mouse, and all is in order–until it happens again with a frog and a bird. Readers might be fooled into thinking that this is just a concept book, but Walsh gives them so much more, including a twist in the ending. Observant children will want to converse about animal and color identification, as well as why the actions and reactions of the animals are creating balances/imbalances on the teeter-totter. The delightful illustrations were done using cut-paper collage and then splattered with acrylic paints. A rock at the middle of the teeter-totter is cleverly placed in the gutter, creating eye-catching spreads with lots of white space and spare text. The game attracts more and more animals, the teeter-totter seesawing up and down with each new arrival, until it collapses beneath the weight. Small in format like her earlier Mouse Paint (1985) and Mouse Count (1991), this is just the right size for small hands and for sharing one-on-one and also offers an opportunity to talk about the different elements of the story, including cooperation, creativity, and sharing as well as basic physics and math. My 2-year-old grandtwins have been deeply stimulated by this book to think about the related concepts of balance and equilibrium which surfaces in many ways throughout their day. After reading the book, I balance it on the back of one of their little chairs and then they try (and succeed) in balancing it there themselves. They have intuitively understood where the balance point is. We talk about what toys (etc.) we can put on either side of the book to keep it in balance or to knock it off balance. They are able to predict what will happen when something is placed on one side or the other. They know that if we put a Really Heavy Thing on one side, the light things on the other side will "fly up in the air!" (which explodes them in giggles every time). They also relate the book to their own balancing on one foot, to being out of balance when they spin around and get dizzy, to things they see in nature. It is astounding how much they have taken away from this simple book. Highly recommended -- I just retired from teaching graduate school but I would have used it in my classes to introduce the concept of equilibrium if I were still teaching.

We love reading this book with our 2-year-old son. Our copy has the two mice, but also a frog on the cover. He really connects with the frogs in the story, so he calls it the frog book.

The artwork is simple, but effective. I am going to check out other books by Walsh at our local public library.

Great Book about Mass

Great book. I used it to introduce mass/weight to 3 and 4 year old students. Very simple book that gets the point across. My one year old son enjoys the book as well. I would definitely recommend this book for young children.

Fae to the rescue 5 stars

H.D. Gordon is a new author to me and I was captivated by her storytelling. The Halfling is fast paced, mystery/suspense urban fantasy that takes you on a wild ride. It has magic, cool gadgets, super swoony men, a kickass heroine, smart and engaging sidekicks and best of all it also has a superhero.

Aria Fae is a seventeen year old, half human and half Fae, who has been banished to the human world. All she knew to be true is no more. Her mother is gone and so is her home. The Peace Brokers she has spent her young life serving for has exiled her, never to return home again. Never thinking how she will survive on her own.

As Aria struggles to accept her fate, she finds herself suddenly thrust into an alien world called, Grant City. She wants to desperately blend in, become the shadow, and hide from everyone so no one notices that she is different.

On her first day at school, she rescues Samantha Shy from getting beat up and forges a bond of true friendship in the midst of confusion and loneliness of this new destiny. Samantha takes Aria under her wings and shows her the ropes. Sam is a geeky, computer whiz. But deep down Sam hides an intense pain that was brought on by the loss of a loved one.

As the story develops, I loved how the author addresses Aria’s battle with depression, how she defined the disease. She portrayed Aria as a strong willed, young woman yet she did not shy away from showing Aria’s vulnerable side. As Aria struggles with what the future holds for her, she succeeds in acclimatizing herself to her new situation with the help of Sam and finally reveals the truth about her origin to her. Sam being Sam totally embraces Aria being half human and half Fae.

H.D. Gordon very subtly incorporate a touch of romance into the story with the entrance of mysterious Reid and charming young Caleb. All through the book I kept rooting for Reid, he played an integral yet elusive role as Aria’s neighbor. Aria manages to intrigue Reid but he keeps his thoughts very close to his chest and never reveal that he knows or that he sees everything. And for Aria there is something about Reid that strikes her imagination and seizes her teen hormones. Whereas, Caleb played a huge role in the story what with his father being who he is. Caleb on the other hand is pretty straight forward about his interest in Aria and he pursues her relentlessly. As Aria slowly starts to make a new life for herself in Grant City, she also makes a new friend in her employer, Rose.

Then Sam, because of her tragic past and because of the Fae skills that Aria possesses, comes up with a plan. She wants Aria to fight crime during her nights and keep the streets of Grant City safe. Sam manages to get her childhood best friend, Mark to tag long on their quest. At first things are easy, dangerous but exhilarating, the trio make a perfect team, each bringing a skillset into the mix. They manage to make quite a dent in the Black Magic market. But little do they know that the main man, Mr. Shy wasn’t a dummy. My heart about jumped out of my chest with what transpires. The true revelation of who Mr. Shy is and what he is all about almost made me throw my kindle. What Aria had to face, how she had to center herself. And the ending and the hurting. OH MY LORD.

The ending left me craving for more and some part of why Aria was banished comes to light. It made me angry and sad and I wanted to hug her and make her feel safe and accepted. If you haven’t read the The Halfling then don’t wait any more, go and 1-click this fastastical story about Fae and their kinds.

I love when a book exceeds my expectations!

The Halfling by H D Gordon is the first book in The Aria Fae Series, a paranormal fantasy that exceeded my expectations with fantastic writing and characters that grabbed hold of me and wouldn’t let go.

Aria knew she couldn’t run from her past, but here she is, in a new place. She is a skate board riding Fae, part of the Brokers, an organization of Halflings, half supernatural and half human. She is an empath and I cannot imagine how difficult that would be in high school. Her empathy and need to help gets her in trouble, but I love her for it. How can I resist a strong character who marches to her own drum?

She meets up with Sam, a girl hacker who becomes her BFF and it changes everything. I love the little nerd, Sam, who is your typical teenager…except for her supernatural skills. I love the connection that brought them together, but you will need to find out for yourself. The girls fun personalities and watching them grow and blossom as they create their family kept me on pins and needles as I kept waiting for the bad to happen. I know it has to come, but I love these kids so much I don’t want anything to happen to them.

Thomas Reid is a hottie and I think he is holding a secret that will add more to the suspense.

H D Gordon can take a familiar theme and twist it so creatively that it becomes fresh and original. Her descriptive writing makes the story seem real and I am unable to resist being drawn in deeper with each page I read. The Halfling has so much that I love, the paranormal, fantasy, determined women (albeit young ones) and so much more. As the story grows, so too does the suspense and mystery. I never saw where this was going and I love when a book exceeds my expectations. I can hardly wait to see what happens next.

Thank Heaven for Strong Women

Ok my favorite reads are the ones that have tough heroines. The ones that throw a few punches, fight their own battles. This book rocked so hard! I loved the two male potential's romances. The romance influences was well written. I bet Aria would be great with either of them. And let me the tell you the Best Friend Sam cracked me up. This book dealt with bullies and depression. It had kick but action scenes. So much to love about this book. If I got to pick a character to be out of the many books I've read I'd choose Aria. This book kept me up way into the next morning. Worth my book hangover. This is worth buying right now. ❤️

An intricately woven novel of love, hate

An intricately woven novel of love, hate, greed, power and forgiveness – A Doomsday Tale was captivating from the first page.

Set in England during the 11th century, Maggie Garfield has created such richly defined characters that are true not only to the time period, but true to the intricacies and temperaments that she has created for them. They leap from the page, grabbing your heart and mind until you find yourself completely enveloped in their story, cheering their victories and cursing their obstacles.

The world that is described around the characters and the story that is woven had me sitting for hours at a time, engrossed in this tale. I highly recommend this book – and absolutely cannot wait for the sequel to continue following the story that has ignited a curiosity and passion for a time period which I previously had no knowledge or interest in.

A Doomsday Tale translates well in the 21st century.

This story is fast paced. The historical characters are well-researched and the author makes them leap from the pages; their lust for power, their greed and, their frailties. The fictional characters, placed in the middle of the royals, are both heroes and victims that pluck at your emotions and effortlessly make you root for and care about them. Set in a time the history with which I'm only moderately familiar, I was impressed that the author wove details and explanations into the story that brought it all to life but didn't bog it down. An excellent read.
